13 years at Marine Federal
The Marine Corps brought my family to Jacksonville, NC when I was seven and I’ve been here ever since. I kind of got off to a slow start with college taking a few classes here and there. It wasn’t until I was married and had my first son when I started to get serious about college. I decided to enroll at UNCW to go to school for accounting. I always loved math and it came easy to me so I thought this was a natural fit. However I learned pretty quick it wasn’t for me! After one class I switched my major to Marketing. Honestly, I choose Marketing because I knew it would involve some sort of graphic design. I’ve always liked being creative so it seemed to be a good fit. Once I got started the psychology behind it intrigued me. A lot of marketing is understanding how people work. You have to understand your audience to anticipate their needs and how to create the best experience for them. I fell in love with it and am so thrilled I can do something I enjoy everyday. It truly never gets boring because people change, the way to advertise and market to people changes, so you always need to stay on top of the game to get the best results.

Ryan L. – Chief Operations Officer
Marine Federal feels like home to me. I’ve been with this organization since my kids were little and it has been a great place to work while maintaining flexibility for family life.
When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time together with my husband and three boys. Life gets busy and I want to enjoy our time together as much as I can. With three boys, a lot of our outings involve food! One of our favorite places to visit on the weekend is Rita’s Italian Ice.
What was your childhood dream job?
To be a nurse.
What makes you laugh the most?
My family! My husband and kids are some of the funniest people I know.
What’s a fictional character you would be?
I’m not very good with knowing super heroes, but I would choose one that can teleport so I can travel places faster!
What type of music do you listen to?
Anything but country.
Is there a surprising fact or skill or talent that you have that not many people would know?
When I was in my late teens I worked pretty much everywhere in Jacksonville.
How do you make banking easy for members?
Working in Marketing you focus a lot on the member experience. This includes their experience on our website, using the app, reading the newsletter, through email offerings, and more. When offering a product or service to fit a members need, my goal is to make adding it to their account an easy experience for them.
I think making an impact doesn’t necessarily have to be one big moment but can be small gestures as well. I don’t really have a specific example, but I hope to make an impact on people through positive interactions. Whether it’s a friendly smile, a compliment, or just telling someone they are doing a good job. Words are powerful. By sharing something positive you can change someone’s outlook for the day.
